23 0500K Aug 50, while PW’s unit (3rd Bn) was marching across a mountain (W of IMAM-Ni) they were attacked by ROK Unit. Because of the heavy MG and rifle fire, PW’s unit was forced to retreat. However instead of retreating PW hid in a ditch. After an hour, the firing ended, at this time PW and 150 men of 3rd Bn surrendered to the ROK Unit.

Present strength and equipment:
3rd Bn - 500 men; HMG Co - 70 men, 3 x Maxim HMG’s (500 rounds per MG) - IMAM-Ni 23 Aug 50.
Losses: Mortar Co, 3rd Bn - 60 men (the entire company surrendered) IMAM-Ni 23 Aug 50.
No replacement of men or equipment since departing SINUIJU - IMAM-Ni (3 Aug - 23 Aug 50).

Supplies:
Since departing SINUIJU (3 Aug 50). PW received average of one meal a day, until capture (23 Aug 50).
Most of the food was confiscated from farmers.
Ammunition last received, SINUIJU - 3 Aug 50, 15 rounds per man.
The 3rd Bn’s supplies (food and ammunition) were brought with them from SINUIJU.
At SINUIJU, PW observed much equipment such as tanks, artillery and trucks, being sent toward PYONGYANG daily (25 Jul - 1 Aug 50) from unknown point. Movement of this equipment was mostly at night about 2400. On one train PW observed about 100 x T-34/85 tanks, 100x122-mm Guns, about 100 GAZ-51 trucks drawn by two locomotives.
During the above period, PW observed the same amount of equipment on each train. One to two trains a night.

Enemy Intention:
The objective of 73rd Ind Inf Regt was TANYANG. however upon arrival (13 Aug 50) the city was already occupied by the NKPA troops.
After TANYANG, mission unknown.

Additional Information:
73rd Ind Inf Regt was organized at SINUIJU, 6 Jul 50. Regt was comprised of recent conscripts except for the officers who had a little military experience.
The 73rd Ind Inf Regt had 6 infantry battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th).
Battalion - 3 rifle companies; HMG Co, 70 men, 3 x HMG’s (500 rounds per MG); Mortars Co, 60 men, no mortars, armed with M1891/30 rifles; Medical Platoon, 20 men, armed with M1944 Carbine, 15 rounds per man; Signal Platoon, 40 men, 1 TAM Field Telephone, armed with M1944 Carbine, 15 rounds per man; Supply Platoon, 20 men. armed with M1944 Carbine, 15 rounds per man; Submachine Gun Platoon, 20 men. armed with PPsh M1941 Sub-machine Gun, 2 x 71 round drums; AT Platoon. 50 men, no At gun, armed with M1891/30 rifles, 15 rounds; 45-mm Platoon, 50 men, no 45-mm Gun, armed with M1891/30 rifles, 15 rounds; Engineer Platoon, 15 men, no equipment, armed with M1891/30 rifles, 15 rounds.
Rifle Company - 150 men, armed with M1891/30 rifles, 15 rounds; No HMG, 5 x DP LMG’s, 1 x 60 rounds drum.

PW states that the other Bn’s (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th) were located in the IMAM-Ni Area (23 Aug 50), exact location unknown.
No information on guerrilla or other unit locations.
