ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 736　25 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 553)　23 August 1950

Informant was cooperative and intelligent. Limited tactical knowledge due to short period of military service. Information seems reliable.

Inducted 8 Jul 50 at SEOUL as part of a labor crew. No limit on age. Received no graining. Demonstrated through streets in SEOUL every day up to 15 Jul 50 for propaganda purposes. Trainees - approx 1,000 men. Frequent movements from one primary school to another took place during stay in SEOUL. Reason - probably to give the illusion of great volunteer strength to the people.

Tactical Movements: A group of 300 men left SEOUL 15 Jul 50 on foot arriving at HAMCH’ANG (1110-1520) o/a 15 Aug. Issued rifles with 100 rds and assigned to 1st Regt of 1st Div as a replacement. Left HAMCH’ANG on the same day arriving 3 km N of CHILGOK on 21 Aug. Deployed along a mountain (called mount 803) and encountered US troops. Captured by US troops.

6th Co CO - KIM (fnu) (金　), age 28, Lt

Observed a Russian civilian in a jeep at MUNGYONG o/a 14 Aug (0600). Accompanies by two NK officers.

1st Plt - 40 men, 1 x 7.62mm LMG, 39 rifles (M1891/30) with 100 rounds. No grenades. Officers armed with pistols. 6th Co - 100 men. weapons unknown. Casualties of 6th Co - 3 killed, 7 wounded at a time PW was captured

Morale in general was low due to shortage of rations and lack of military training. Most troops except leaders, were looking for a change to desert. Effect of mortar fire was comparatively great.

Fed three rice balls daily, However, ration was insufficient. Most of the food was confiscated from villagers. Ammunition was short due to interdiction of supply routes.

1st Div was ordered to take T’AEGU by 15 Aug 30. It has been said that approx 10 divisions were involved in the attack on TAEGU (Hearsay).
