ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 647　21 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0473)　18 August 1950

Information limited to travels and incidents. PW was replacement for 7th Regt of 3rd Div. No knowledge of weapons and personnel.

Inducted 10 Jul 50, at SARIWON with 1,000 men. No basic training. PW departed SARIWON with a replacement unit of 1,000 12 Jul 50 by rail. Arrived SEOUL 14 Jul 50. Observed about 200 NK troops and many Volunteer Security troops in SEOUL. No tanks were observed but was many trucks (American 2½ ton) with white star still on the hood. PW’s unit departed SEOUL 15 Jul on foot, arrived in SUWON (Date unk). No NK troops at SUWON, but there were many Volunteer Army men armed with American carbines. No tanks observed in SUWON.

Departed SUWON (Date unk) arrived in CHOCH’IWON (鳥致院) (1020-1520) (Date unk). Observed NK troops (about Regtl strength in CHOCH’IWON. 760 men remained in CHOCH’IWON as replacements for unk unit. Security troops or tanks were not observed. Departed CHOCH’IWON by wading KUM River (PW states that bridge was out and as yet no other bridge had been built). Arrived KUMCH’ON (1110-1460) (Date unk) and joined the 7th Regt of the 3rd Div. Before replacements were assigned to the 7th Regt, the strength of the 7th Regt was 500. Departed KUMCH’ON and arrived near the W bank of the NAKTONG River in the vicinity of WAEGWAN 14 Aug 50.

15 Aug 50 the 7th Regt was attacked by the ROK troops at an unknown mountain and about 600 men of the 7th Regt were killed. 16 0800 K Jul 50 the remaining 100 of the 7th Regt crossed the NAKTONG River and hid in a nearby mountain. At 16 1100 K Aug 50 they were again attacked by the ROK troops. PW was wounded and captured by ROK troops. PW thinks that most of the 100 men that crossed the river were killed.

Average of two rice balls a day. 10 rounds were issued each replacement.
