Military History:
Inducted 27 Sep 46 at HAMHUNG into the Railroad Guard Brigade. Trained as rifleman and sometimes guarded railway at HAMHUNG 14 months. Departed HAMHUNG 14 Jan 48 by rail - arrived P’YONGYANG 16 Jan 48. 8 Feb 48, PW was assigned to 3rd “People Army” Division. Trained as infantryman, P’YONGYANG - 4 months.
Departed P’YONGYANG 18 Aug 48 - by rail - arrived HAMHUNG 20 Aug 48. Trained as rifleman. Promoted to Sgt at HAMHUNG 9 Oct 46.
Departed HAMHUNG Feb 49 - rail - arrived one day later at WONSAN. Received advanced infantry training 5 months. Promoted to Jr Lt 15 Jul 49
Departed WONSAN 20 Aug 49 - rail - arrived P’YONGYANG (平壤) 21 Aug 49. Trained as Plt ldr with 3rd Div Hqrs at P’YONGYANG about 10 months.

On 14 Aug 50, PW’s platoon (1st Plt) was added to the 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 7th Regt of the 3rd Div. Prior to that it had only been assigned to 3rd Div Hqrs. The 3rd Div had just retreated from WAEGWAN. 3rd Div CG appointed PW 4th Co Commander and ordered PW’s 4th Co to aid 2nd Bn in the defense of a hill about 2 km southeast of NAKTONG-NI (1120-1490)
At about 0700 hrs 16 Aug 50, ROK units attacked 2nd Bn on hill about 2 km Southeast of NAKTONG-NI. By 16 1900 K Aug 50, 2nd Bn and 200 casualties (200 dead, 100 wounded). 5th and 6th Co COs were killed. 2nd Bn CO could not be found. Therefore PW ordered 2nd Bn (4th, 5th, 6th Companies) to withdraw north until they could join other “Peoples Army” units or at least escape ROK fire.
Withdrawal was begun 16 1900 K Aug 50. PW planned to remain until all three companies were withdrawn. Shortly after 1900 hrs PW was wounded by ROK rifle bullet which soared his left chest and then broke his left arm. PW lost consciousness. PW screamed with pain. ROK soldiers hearing him, captured him at 10 2000 Aug 50.
