ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 606　19 August 1950

Cooperative. However he lacked information because he was not in a regular infantry unit.

Inducted at HAMHUNG on 28 Jul 46, Peace Preservation Unit, a guard unit. Took basic training and also did guard duties for 4 months.

Departed HONGCH’ON - 20 Jul 50 - foot - arrived outskirts of WONJU, passed CHECH’ON, TANYANG, YONGJU, NAESONG, YONGYANG, and arrived in CH’ONGSONG 11 Aug 50.

On 14 Aug while PW was talking with the Bn CO on the food situation, they were suddenly attacked by planes and ROK troops. Before PW knew what was happening everybody scattered, PW crossed about 5 hills before he reached a small farm village “TOPYONG NI”. The following morning he was captured by ROK troops while sleeping.

PW stated that he had written the names of officers in his Co but the ROK MP’s took the paper away from him.

Present in company: 40 rifles, M1691/30, type 99 Jap, type 38 Jap, US carbine M-1, 2 x LMG, no HMG. Approx 40 rifles, 2 x HMG, 2 x PPsh submachine guns (Sqd ldr and ass’t LMG gunner), 1 x UP LMG in a squad. Officers carried NAGANT revolver. Riflemen carried 50 rounds, 50 grenades in entire company.

PW stated that he did not know the total number of weapons and men because they traveled mostly by companies and moreover they were supposed to be a guard unit. PW also stated that the Bn CO told the company CO’s that since they had insufficient weapons and ammo, engagements would be lost. In such a case the Bn CO recommended they tell the men to meet at TAEJON-NI (大前里) (between CH’ONGSONG & YONGCH’ON). However, before he could tell the men, they were attacked so PW thinks the plan was not carried out.

PW stated that his former 16th Guard Bn which was under the Internal Security Bureau received orders to go under the Border Guard Bureau, This Border Guard Bureau formed Regts from its brigades when war started. That was the reason why he was in the 1st Regt, 10th Bn.

PW stated that they received only two meals a day. Food was gathered from village farms. PW stated that all the units as SEOUL were sent to other units as replacements so he received 130 NK recruits and 10 SK recruits about 2/3 of which were students. 2/3 of his men had not received any weapons because there were none. Source of ammo unknown.
