Military History:
Inducted 24 May 49 at NANAM. 3 months basic training at NANAM. Departed NANAM 20 Jun 50 for YANGYANG. Departed YANGYANG 24 Jun 50. Engaged in battle with SK forces at KANGNUNG 25 Jun 50. Arrived YONGDOK 22 Jul 50 after fighting at SAMCHOK, ILWONJIN and ULCHIN. Departed YONGDOK 6 Aug 50. Arrived CHANGSA-DONG 8 Aug 50. Attacked by SK unit on night of 9 Aug 50. Separated from unit and captured 10 (1000) Aug 50 2 km West of CHANGSA-DONG.

T/O of PW’s Unit:
5th Division consisted of three (3) rifle regiments, an artillery regt, and engineer bn and a signal bn. The engineer bn was composed of two (2) road repair companies and a river-crossing equipment company. Engineer bn composed of three (3) companies of 90 men each. Casualty rate very low in this unit (approx 6 men per Co).
Equipment carried by the two road repair companies included shovels, crew bars, and picks. River crossing equipment company had only axes and saws. Each company carried 30 kgs of explosives. Heard that land mines will be distributed to the unit in the near future. Enlisted men in unit carried Russian rifles with 100 rounds.

Five (5) 45 mm AT guns, three (3) 76 mm field guns and six (6) 120 mm howitzers observed 8 km East of YONGDOK 1 Aug 50. Trucks loaded with ammo to be used for pulling artillery pieces also seen here.

Supplies:
No food supplied since crossing 38th parallel and everybody living off the land. Ammo supply hand-carried by SK farmers who were rearaited. Route followed is believed to be from YANGYANG through SAMCH’OK, UTCHIN, to YANGDOK.

Replacement, Wounded Personnel & Stranglers:
No replacements for 5th Division since crossing 38th parallel.

Enemy Intention:
Objective of 5th Division - POHANG DONG. G

Morale:
Morale of 5th Division low because of daily air and naval bombardment suffered while unit was in YONGDOK.

Hearsay: NKAF to be used in the western sector. Date unknown.

Civilian Attitude:
South Korean civilians were deserting their homes before North Korean Army arrived.
